Getting Started The best way start is to write down your negative self talk. - Get out some Paper
- Divide your paper in half
- Start writing your negative thoughts in the left hand column
- Begin creating your positive statements in the right hand column
- Examples:
| Negative Thought | Positive Statement | | I'm worthless. | I am valuable. | | I can't do anything right. | I am able to accomplish any task. | | I'm too lazy to be successful. | I am successful and love doing the work to get there. |
This may feel awkward at first; especially if you don't believe the positive statements you'd like to be true. Don't worry, just go with it. Helpful hints... - They are life affirming statements.
- Something that you want to have, do, or be.
- They are best used in the present tense.
More Examples | Incorrect | Correct | | I want to be happy. | I am happy. | | I will eat healthy. | I eat healthy foods. | | I want to be confident. | I am confident. | | I will create joy in my life. | I create joy in my life daily. |
Make sure that your statements are in the present tense! If it's in the future tense; you're telling yourself that it is always going to be just out of your reach.
How to Use Them- Out loud
- Silently/Reading
- Mirror
- Writing
- Repetition
- Give it Time
No matter how you use them; the key is repetition. If you need a jump start; try this list of affirmations to get started. If you feel like you aren't getting the results you want, you may want to try using
afformations
instead. They work with your brain's natural tendency to use questions instead of statements. I find this method more effective.
