At a Loss

I try to stop binging by regulating my diet and eating properly.I have been trying to eat normally for the past 5 days and letting myself have a bit of a treat daily so I would not feel deprived.

But it seems like I'm binging more and binging everyday, from the small treat it becomes not really a binge but an "overeating" session.
I tried writing journals but it does not seem to work cuz every time I fall into a binge I'm too filled with the thoughts of eating that I do not even think about turning to writing.

What should i do?

Thanks and God bless.

ANSWER

The very first thing you need to do is be patient with yourself; this process takes time. The second thing is to be kind with yourself when you do make mistakes.

When I began the process of learning what I needed to do to end binge eating; I made lots of choices to binge or overeat. I remember the urges being so strong that I felt forced to do it. I believe it was because binging was not only an emotional escape; but a habit for me as well.

If you have a hard time using writing as a tool; then try something physical. Literally move your body in dramatic ways. You can put on your favorite fast paced music and just let yourself go. Or simply jump up and down several times.

When you involve your body to that level your mind shifts its thinking and you may be able to snap yourself out of that moment and write instead (or something else that calms and nurtures you).

If at the end of all that you still binge... start writing. But NOT about how mad you are at yourself. Write about the events that happened before the binge; you may find the trigger.
Write out an imaginary sequence of a choice that you would have to like to have made. And really live in that moment; imagine it as vividly as possible. The next time you come to the point of binging; you'll be more likely to choose otherwise.

Overcoming binge eating is not just about the absence of it. It is about replacing it with other coping skills that support your health and well being.

All my Best,

Stefanie
