Is Chocolate Addiction Real?

There are many opinions about whether or not chocolate addiction exists.

The argument is that the "need for chocolate" is only a craving and a result of emotional triggers. But there are other standpoints that say the chemical make up of cocoa (chocolate) can be addictive; similar to caffeine.

So while the jury may still be out.... it is an issue for most binge and emotional eaters.

Whether it is an actual addiction or simply a craving... it was one of my trigger foods that would lead to a full blown binge eating episode.

I am in no way, shape, or form going to tell you to stop eating chocolate! I love being able to indulge in my favorite treat; in fact I do so almost everyday. The trick is to do so in moderation.

I used to keep milk chocolate chips in my house.I remember opening a bag after I had a discipline issue with my youngest daughter. I took a handful of those 'divine' morsels and let them comfort my frustration away as they melted. The rest of the day ensued with multiple handfuls every time I felt on edge. Before I knew it; the entire bag had been emptied.

When I realized that chocolate was a mainstay binge food for me; I had to take action. I decided to buy semi-sweet chips instead of milk chocolate chips. The semi-sweet just didn't give me the same 'relief' that the others provided.I did try to eat the less desirable form a few times... but I soon realized that I would rather write in my journal than eat bitter chocolate!

What do you think? Is there such thing as chocolate addiction? Does it trigger you to overeat?

I don't know if it has been an 'addiction' for me... but it definitely has been something I've been drawn to for comfort.
