Don't Know Where to Start
by Kaitlyn
(USA)
I'm 14 years old and I have binge eating disorder. I really don't have much of a family so I don't have any support there. My parents are trying to help my brother with his drug addictions and don't need another one to worry about.
I have been struggling with this for as long as I can remember. I think its because my mom is a health nut and never let me over-eat or eat junk food. So every time she left the house I stuffed my face. I've continued that habit to. I've gained 10 pounds in the last 4 months, and 15 in the last 8 months. I'm truly scared of becoming overweight.
Thing is I've tried counting calories, and little week by week healthier lifestyle things and they don't work. I don't have money for programs. I was just looking for support and a little help. I'm so lost, I don't know were to start or what to do.
ANSWER
Although I cannot speak directly to ANYONE under the age of 18....I will address this situation in general terms (when I say "you" I am referring to a general audience).
It can be very challenging as a young adult to struggle with binge eating. Not really understanding why the patterns of overeating and losing weight consume a lot of your time; you can feel lost and victimized.
The #1 concept that you can understand is that its really not about the food.
You see, eating disorders are all about getting "control". Whether its anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, or a combination of all three. But using food to control actually creates having less control; and more problems.
So why do you need to control? It varies from one person to another. But it is usually a need that arises from losing control in other areas of life.
Control is a funny thing; we all try to control things that are out of our control instead of focusing on what we do have control of (our own actions and choices).
I encourage finding support. Either through parents (first choice), school counselors, or other sources. I WISH I could do one on one coaching for minors; but unfortunately... without parental consent; coaching and counseling may not be do-able for under age young adults.
Seek help. Just remember that it's not about another diet or exercise program. Its about the beliefs that created the need for binge eating in the first place.
Decide to learn all you can about overcoming binge eating; you can use this website and work on creating a support system for yourself.
All my Best,
Stefanie
