Binge Eating Disorder Prevention

Binge eating disorder prevention: What can you do? First you could start off by avoiding any type of unhealthy diet.

As an Adult

You wouldn't be here unless you are already battling with emotional eating.

So "pure prevention" may not be possible at this point. But you can prevent things from getting even more out of hand.

Follow the links below to see what you can do.

  1. Binge Eating Diet: Is there such thing as a binge eating diet? Or would going on a diet work for a person who has binge eating disorder?

  2. Binge Eating Medication: Is there a medication for binge eating that really works?

  3. Trigger Food: A trigger food is considered something that you "cannot" go without. Some people like to call them comfort foods.

As a Parent

The best kind of prevention is the early kind. The best gift you can give your child is the freedom to be themselves with your guided direction.

When you have young children pay specific attention to:

  • Hunger cues: don't force your child to eat after they have lost interest in food. Let them tell you when they are hungry.
  • Food as a reward: never give food as a reward. Try other alternatives, like special time with Mom or Dad.
  • Body image: help them accept their bodies. The best way to do this is to have a good body image yourself. They pay more attention than you think. Our children are little mirrors to us.
  • Self esteem: build their confidence. As a parent, yelling shouldn't be part of your discipline routine. Too many times kids hear, "I can't believe you did that... you are so naughty". Guess what: if they hear it from you, they believe it and act it out. The result is believing that they cannot do anything right and low self esteem.

Binge eating disorder prevention is possible; even if you've already developed it. Never give up!
