Emotional Eating

Is there a difference between emotional eating and binge eating?

If you want to get "technical" you could define a difference. But the bottom line is that they are both caused by the same thing:

  • Emotions that you don't know how to deal with.

Right now it may seem easier to eat instead of doing the emotional work to become balanced and stop self-sabotage. But is it really easier?

  • Or is overeating just familiar and safe?
  • Even after you have begun to heal; you may slip from time to time and eat in response to emotions other than hunger. But remember that its normal! It's your comfort zone; where you like to stay. It is familiar; but you can create a new comfort zone for yourself!

You may feel stuck because you do have desires and things you want in life that are contradictory to staying where you are. But the familiarity of feeling miserable pulls you back in because you "know" it. Even if it is painful and not what you consciously want.

Becoming emotionally healthy happens one step at a time, not overnight. But it is possible with more knowledge:

Be brave and step out of your familiar comfort zone. Choose not to eat when you have that emotional urge to do so. Even if it is just once. Notice what it feels like to nurture yourself instead of numbing out with food.

Yes, its unfamiliar and scary. But it also brings freedom and joy you cannot find otherwise.

The best way to overcome emotional overeating is to learn the skills necessary to deal with the emotions you don't know what to do with. Food may have become a cover up for anything you don't want to feel; but it doesn't have to stay that way.

Keep moving one foot in front of the other. Temporary failure is bound to find you; but if you never give up you WILL succeed!
