Emotional Problems and Overeating

I am a firm believer that overeating is directly related to our emotional problems. In fact you can "hide" behind binge eating.

I never used to know what it felt like to be emotionally balanced; solving problems instead of soothing them away with food (or any other addictive behaviors). But when I began addressing my emotional voids... overeating started to disappear!

What does it mean if overeating, binge, and emotional eating are directly related to our emotional issues?

It means that solving those issues would naturally solve the problem of binge and emotional eating.

I once had a conversation with a woman on twitter about binge eating disorder (BED). She insisted that her BED had nothing to do with her emotions. That it was essentially something she had no control over. I couldn't convince her otherwise so I politely disagreed and wished her well.

I don't know how anyone can truly overcome emotional or binge eating unless they face what pushes them to food. If you're not 'hungry'... then it is some other emotion that food is being used to eliminate. Whether it's boredom, loneliness, frustration, or any other emotion.

Is it All About Emotions?

The answer is yes and no. Your emotional problems may be the driving force of overeating (or at least the most obvious one). But where do your emotions come from?

What produces those feelings? They simply cannot appear by themselves.... something brings them on. If you put two different people in the same situation... will their reactions be the same?

Lets take a lion tamer and professional dancer. If you asked them to train a lion which one would agree to do so? The obvious answer is the lion tamer. But why? The lion tamer has experience and believes that he can do such a task. The dancer doesn't have any belief to support him in training a lion.

The labels that the world has put on you and your beliefs through your life experiences are what develop your thoughts and emotions of your self worth.

When these labels and beliefs are negative in nature, we often times turn to addictive behaviors to numb our senses that are sending negative energy to our core beliefs.

These core beliefs surface as thoughts and emotional problems. The same issues that have you running to food to cope.

This is very GOOD news! It means that you have the control. The answer is right in front of you: Face your emotional issues and food won't have that all powerful grip anymore.

No, you will not overcome your emotional problems or binge eating overnight. But knowing how to is half the battle.
