Helping my Daughter
by Molly Kelly
My daughter starts eating something because she feels hungry and then goes into an eating frenzy, normally hidden.
She then suffers from such guilt and self hate etc etc.
Is there any known behavioral 'trick' to help her stop before she gets into the eating frenzy.
ANSWER
I don't know of any 'trick'... that is kind of like wishing there were a magic pill.
Overcoming emotional eating behaviors takes time. It requires learning new skills to solve problems, be willing to feel emotions, and relieving stress in healthy ways.
The best thing you can do for your daughter is to LOVE her. I'm sure that you do... but does she feel it? Does she come to you with her problems? Does she feel safe to tell you things that you may not approve of? Is she using food to comfort herself?
I would avoid suggesting any restrictive diets; or even telling her what she should and/or shouldn't eat. Don't comment on her weight or how much she eats... those are simply symptoms of the real problem.
She may find it beneficial to get some counseling. If you do choose to reach out with counseling, make sure that your daughter feels safe and connects with the counselor.
I wish you all the best with helping your daughter. If you have any more questions... or just need an ear to listen. Please feel free to get in touch with me again.
All my Best,
Stefanie
