Journal Writing

Journal writing has been the main support for me in overcoming binge eating. It has provided me many benefits. I have a clarity of mind that I hadn't experienced previously.

Having my thoughts, emotions, and experiences on paper brought them to a tangible form. Now my issues are more solvable.

There is something about being able to see it in writing that gives a person a new perspective! A fresh eye, and inspiration to solutions.

Ideas for writing:

  • No need to have perfect handwriting, spell perfectly, or have proper English.  Just write like you talk.  Let it flow....
  • Write for at least 10-15 minutes (I know this is hard;especially with little children!  Sometimes 2 minutes is all I get.)
  • Read out loud what you've written; and write the thoughts that come to mind.
  • If you feel stuck try using your non-dominant hand.  It helps to unlock your sub-conscious mind.

Writing daily has given me a better understanding of who I am; and what really goes on in my head.  It has helped me unlock buried issues and beliefs that are unhealthy.

The best part is that I feel good after writing.  I have a sense of release- not only emotionally, but physically as well.  I feel renewed with a sense of peace.

All that is required is paper and something to write with. Writing is a simple form of therapy that helps push your life in the direction you want.

I prefer a nice pen with a hard spiral bound journal. It is what has worked for me the best.  But I've also foundplaces online that you can keep a private journal if you don't have your normal journal handy.  Like: www.Penzu.com

I do keep a food portion of my journal.  I've found it valuable to connect my emotions with the urges I have to binge.  Here is a template to give you an idea of how it works for me.

I've also provided some journal writing examples. These are REAL excerpts from my journals. They include not only my good days; but my challenging ones as well.

I want you to see that I'm a real person that lives with emotional struggles... and has found the ability to overcome them and create joy in my life!
