Positive Thinking

Positive thinking is an essential part of overcoming binge eating. Without your thoughts & beliefs shifting; nothing will change or improve.

Your reality begins with your thoughts.

"Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

-Abraham Lincoln

If you naturally lean towards a negative train of thought; you may think like this:

  • I'm so fat!
  • I'll never be good enough.
  • Why do I always mess things up?
  • I'm never going to be at my ideal weight.

Your world is going to reflect the things you "say" to yourself.

When you think on the negative side; that is how you will see the world and how you will feel.

You may not be consciously aware of what you are thinking. But it still creates your reality.

So how do you shift negative thinking into positive thinking?

Let's change the statements from above into positive self talk:

  • My body isn't perfect; but I am blessed with the ability to walk.
  • I like learning the skills I need to succeed.
  • I would like to try that again; I can do that better.
  • I love my body and its ability to shed weight when I treat it right.

If you want to see the world in a positive way; then that is how you need to think about it.

Try looking on the bright side of bad situations. Focus on the solutions instead of the problem. And remember that it's okay to be imperfect.

You are not going to be binge free within a week. It may take 8 months or 8 years. It doesn't matter! The best things in life take time and patience. Overcoming binge eating is no exception.

The important part is that you never quit. You may fail from time to time; but failing only makes you stronger. Keep pressing forward!

How to Create Positive Thinking

  1. Create affirmations : these are positive statements to help you begin to shift into a more positive mindset. Click on "affirmations" to get started.

  2. Create Afformations : these are affirmations on steroids! They work with your brain's natural tendency to use questions. Click on "afformations" to get started.

Or you can get started right now with this list of afformations to stop binge eating.

  3. Journal writing: Letting your thoughts flow out onto paper can serve as a wonderful tool and a catalyst for positive thinking.

If you take the time to notice what you "say" to yourself; you'll know if you tend towards positive or negative self talk.

You will be able to see what kind of thoughts are propelling your life.

If you already keep a journal, then get it out. Look over some entries and see what kind of thoughts you usually have. You can turn some of your more negative thoughts into affirmations or afformations.

  4. Stopping the thought: You have the power to end a thought the very second it creeps in.

    • Say "Stop" aloud.
    • Replace the thought with one of your affirmations/afformations you've created.
    • If it continues; do some relaxation breathing.

Where do your Negative Thoughts come from?

Your thoughts come from somewhere right?

Do you have a thought you can't seem to shake? You know, the one that keeps popping up no matter how hard you try to shake it.

Where is it coming from?

It's from your Beliefs.

If you believe that somehow you mess everything up; all your thoughts will support that belief. Your emotions and actions will also fall in line with it.

Shifting into positive thinking is possible by focusing on your thoughts alone. But what if you knew what belief was driving that nagging thought you don't want?

By understanding your beliefs you can use your thoughts to maximize your outcome.
