Recovering from Bulimia
Hey...well basically when I was 12 I was 11 stone and absolutely hated the way I looked. So
I started binging and purging till I collapsed one day. Then I stopped at around 13.
I started gaining some weight so I started again and now I'm 8.5 stone...
I'm 14 and I'm happy with the weight I am now and I'm ready to stop but how can I stop without gaining any weight? I always laze about when I get home so I don't really do much exercise.
I'd be really happy if you could help
Thanks :) X
ANSWER
The first thing that I need to say is that because you are only 14 I cannot speak directly to you. I cannot give advice to anyone underage without parental consent.
But I would like to address your situation: for general information purposes only.
3 Things to Keep in Mind while recovering from Eating Disorders:
First: Lifestyle Changes
The best way to end eating disorders and not gain any weight is to implement lifestyle changes. It's not only about stopping; it is also about learning to live in a healthy manner.
Eat regular meals. And make sure that the foods you are eating are good for you. You have to give your body the proper fuel to run efficiently.
Get moving. Replace your afternoon 'laze' time with a short walk; or other activities that you like to do.
Second: Expression
The best way to stay stuck in an eating disorder is to leave things 'bottled up'. Most of the time eating disorders are about more than 'losing' weight. They come from deeper issues that you may not be aware of.
The best way to eliminate the disorder is to express your feelings and deal with situations directly and in a mature manner.
You cannot change your lifestyle without supporting beliefs and positive thinking that enable those changes. Expressing your emotions through journal writing can help a person see where they are going wrong and intuitively know where the changes need to be made.
Third: Support System
The biggest mistake that most people make is keeping their struggles with food hidden from the people who love them the most.
Your support system can be your secret weapon!
But you must be willing to make the changes that will create the life you want. No one can do it for you. Ask for the help and support that you need and you find it.
You may find people who don't understand; but don't let that stop you. Eventually you will have a very strong support system to lean on in your weak moments.
Having it out in the open creates a sense of accountability that will help you move forward.
All my Best,
Stefanie
