Trigger Food

A trigger food is considered something that you "cannot" go without. Some people like to call them comfort foods.

What foods do you feel weak around?

For me it is mainly Chocolate ... but I have others also. Like...

  • Chips
  • Ice cream
  • Cereal
  • Pizza/Pizza rolls
  • Breads/pastries
  • Almost anything crunchy, salty or sweet.

My typical binge would start out with some pizza rolls. They would be followed by a bowl of cereal and then maybe my favorite ice cream too. I could consume anywhere between 500-2000 calories within a half hour.

If I was having a "bad" day, I could binge 2-3 times. With a day like that, my binging calories could easily reach 1500-6000. That is not even counting my regular meals; I didn't want others to know what I had eaten so I would eat my regular meals so they wouldn't find out about my "secret".

The whole point is that we don't usually binge on healthy foods.

The best way to help you get started and tune into your body is to get these foods out of arms reach. This doesn't have to be permanent; you can eat them again, but only after you have your binge eating under control.

Odds are they are foods you eat when you're not even hungry in the first place. This allows you to address your emotions instead of shoving them down with food.

  • Getting rid of your trigger foods needs to be coupled with journal writing. This helps you to better understand WHY you want to binge.
  • In most cases some type of counseling is very helpful. It's hard to know why you eat when you're not hungry. It can seem like a mystery that is simply unsolvable by yourself.
